Ellsworth was born on July 16th, 1861 in Ingham, Michigan, in the United States to John C Bishop and Florella Moore. He was the youngest of four children, two boys and two girls.
In 1870 he was nine years old and lived with his mother and three siblings in a house worth $600 in Allegany, New York.
He completed a sixth grade education.
In 1895 he married Mary Matilda Frye.
Their first child, Norma, was born in March of 1895 in North Dakota.
Their second child, Gladys Emma , was born on April 8th, 1897 in Fargo, ND.
In 1900 he lived with Mary, two daughters and a boarder named Grace Denny in Fargo Ward 6, Cass, North Dakota. He was a railroad conductor.
Their third child, Grace Alice, was born on October 30th, 1903 in Spokane, WA.
In 1920 Ellsworth and Mary lived in Proctor, Minnesota in a rented home with their daughter, Grace (16), and a lodger named Bert Coppersmith. Ellsworth and Bert were both listed as conductors for the steam railroad.
In 1930 Ellsworth and Mary still lived in Proctor, MN with Grace (26). Grace was now married, but her husband is not listed on the census. Ellsworth was still a conductor for the railroad.
In 1940 he and Mary lived in the same house, 4B E 2nd St. Proctorknott, MN, which they owned and was worth $3000.
